Structural bonding in transportation industry

Structural Bonding

This is the name given to a bond that performs a load‑bearing function. This means that forces in a structure may be transmitted from one member to another through the joint. This force would be taken up by the adhesive and spread or transmitted to the next member.

Multiresistant Bonding

Not all adhesively bonded joints are solely structural, and multiresistant bonding is the use of adhesives where the joint also withstands other environmental forces. For example, it could maintain its integrity and still be resistant to the effects of salt water spray, temperature cycling and vibration.

Composite manufacturers and sub contractors for the Rail and Transport Industry need to be up to date on all new technologies. We introduced ourselves to a couple of companies in this sector and presented our 3rd generation Structural Methacrylates.

Structural adhesives have advanced a long way in the last 15 years where bonding of structures has become more of a need than an advantage.
Engineering testing has proven that the rivet and weld are quickly becoming a thing of the past. ' With this in mind we have launched our
range of structural methacrylate adhesives with the customer in mind by engineering the adhesive to fit their needs, as opposed to the customer having to alter their process to fit the adhesive.

All these advantages may be translated into economic advantages: improved design, easier assembly, lighter weight (inertia overcome at till lower energy expenditure) and longer life in service.

Tests carried out over a 6 month period involved found the adhesive to be almost "too good" for the application. Concessions have now been granted for this product to be used in the rail industry.
