Non-slump technology allows gap fill up to 40mm

A leading powerboat manufacturer has adopted the use of methacrylate adhesive in the application of bonding the deck to the hull. The application originally used mechanical fasteners set into the surface of the moulded GRP. This original use of fasteners caused problems due to the cracking and crazing in the gel‑coat around the area of the fastener. The use of the
adhesive around the entire joint allows any stresses to be distributed around the full line, totally avoiding any cracking. In addition the strength of the bond achieved so strong, the fibreglass will delaminate before the bond will
ever break.

A further application within this field incorporates the use of bonded fasteners, which allow fixings to be added to the internal section of the hull, long after the hull has left the GRP moulding bay. In addition to the strength (de‑lamination of the fibreglass) methacrylate also has a superb
non‑slump characteristic which allows the fixings to be applied on vertical surfaces. It can also be built up, to fill gaps of up to 40mm.
